Welcome to the Dismantling Supremacy Discussion Series

In this Collab Lab discussion series, we talk about supremacy culture and our responsibility to examine it within ourselves and our communities.

Connecting individual struggle & systemic inequality

False Binaries & Social Constructs

This work is best done in community: Join the Winter Incubator and Summer Luminator for space to work through this together.

In the Collab Lab, we’re examining how binary constructs uphold roots of the kyriarchy including racism, ableism, sexism, classism, and more.

What if…

False binaries and either/or social constructs

Such as racial & gender binaries, high/low functioning disabilities, good/bad people, us vs. them…

…were designed by people with power to divide those with less power to prevent us from joining together in collective liberation?

Shared Language:

What is a social binary?

Growing Up:
  • Which social binaries were you taught to believe were inherent to individual humans?
  • Which binaries were seen as hallmarks of  ‘civilized,’ ‘superior‘ or ‘first world‘ societies?
  • Who benefited from teaching you this?
Individual Impact
  • What privileges do you hold as a person who fits within a socially constructed binary?
(examples: cisgender, non-disabled or clearly disabled, monoracial)
  • How have you condoned or fed into the myth of false binaries with your kids?
Systemic Impact
  • Which false binaries does your activism and care work depend on, sustain, or reinforce?
  • Which false binaries does your work confront and dismantle?
